Our caravan was divided up into five pods. We were pod number 5 and left at 9:30 a.m. with Bob and Jackie in the lead. The Tail Gunner was back behind us. We no sooner got out of the RV park and onto the paved road when we heard this horrible thumping sound like a flat tire. We pulled over to the side of the road and got out to look. There was a huge rock wedged tightly in between our left rear duals. We called the Tail Gunner to let him know where we were and what happened to us. He said he would be there right away. We got a hammer and tried to hammer it out but it wouldn’t budge. Soon a couple of Mexican men, who had been watching us, came up to help. One of them crawled under the RV and used an axe to try and wedge it loose. They also used a chisel to finally break it up enough to get it out. We were very grateful and offered them money, but they refused to take it. We thanked them and departed.
We stopped a little further down the road to take a picture of this monument in honor of General Martinez Lopez, one of Poncho Villa’s Generals. It started to rain so we took our time driving. We went through Apple Country. Huge orchards with large black nets at the side. In the rainy season, the nets are stretched out over the entire orchard to protect it from hail. After our lunch stop, we passed through many small villages. We entered the Pine and Juniper forest where a lot of their lumber comes from for housing. The road led us up through the mountains with beautiful scenery and lots of cows, horses and donkeys. The summit was at an altitude of 8,800 feet.
Later on, we made a potty stop where we encountered a wild pig who was busy foraging for food. We passed several lumber mills and went over many narrow bridges. The road was actually pretty easy to drive. We arrived at our RV park, Hotel Villa Mexicana & Trailer Park ten minutes prior to our meeting time. We quickly drove into our spot and walked over to the restaurant for our meeting. The tour guide, Ceasare, was going to give us a talk about what to expect the next day on our trip down into the Copper Canyon. They gave us free margaritas and he told us what we should bring and that we would be leaving in the morning at 8:40 a.m. (Mexican time?)We went back to our RV and plugged in our electricity. The rain was really coming down. We got into a small bus at 5:30 p.m. that took us to Sierra Bonitas for dinner. The bus was an old school bus and the windows kept fogging up because they had no heat and no defroster. So the driver and another guy kept wiping the windows down. It got to be pretty funny. When we arrived at the restaurant we saw tigers in a cage just outside the restaurant. They were big and beautiful. We got a table for four with Bob and Jackie. Again they brought us free Margaritas. We had a bowl of corn chowder and a buffet serving pasta with sliced mushrooms, chicken and beef with broccoli. The food was very good. And of course, flan for dessert. We had another fun ride back to the RV park. It continued to rain hard all night long.
