Only took us an hour to drive to Daytona Beach, FL from Orlando. In the afternoon we drove south to see the Ponce de Leon Inlet Lighthouse. It was originally built in 1835 but collapsed before the lamps were ever lit. It was rebuilt in 1887 using red brick from Baltimore and had an 168 foot tower. The Coast Guard shut down the light in 1970 and built a simple steel tower lighthouse at the Smyrna Dunes Coast Guard Station. This light quickly became ineffective as high-rise construction took over. In 1983 the Ponce de Inlet Light was decommissioned. It is one of the most attractive lighthouses and the lightkeeper’s house and other buildings have been restored completely.
