Drove to see the Jupiter Lighthouse located about one hour south of Vero Beach. The only way that you can see the lighthouse up close is to go with a tour guide. The lighthouse is managed by the Coast Guard so anyone coming onto the property must be escorted. The lighthouse was designed by George Meade who later defeated Robert E. Lee at Gettysburg. Construction began in 1853 but was stopped by Seminole attacks and later because the workmen were plagued by mosquitoes, extreme heat, and disease, which were called Jupiter Fever, most likely malaria or yellow fever. It was finally lit in 1860.Tuesday, April 22, 2008
