April 12, 2008 - McClellanville, NC

Larry found a boat tour to take us out to two lighthouses near McClellanville and Georgetown. Since it was a short drive to McClellanville, we decided to stay one more night where we were in Charleston. The boat tour was with Captain George Gallager and he said that he could meet us at 11:00 a.m. in a parking lot at McClellanville. His wife, Bonnie, accompanied him. We got in his car and drove to a near by boat ramp. It was windy so it got a little bumpy at times but at least it was sunny. They were about our age and asked us a lot of questions about ful-timing in an RV. They both had seriously thought about it but they still had to sell their home which had been on the market for two years. He first took us down the Intracoastal Waterway for a 1 ½ hour ride to the Georgetown Lighthouse (1812). It was very rough and made it difficult to take pictures bobbing up and down in the boat. We headed back towards the dock and beyond to the Cape Romain Lighthouse (1858) located on lighthouse island. On the way, the wind blew Larry’s glasses (including the clip-ons) right off his head and into the water. There wasn’t a thing you could do to retrieve them. His rimless glasses are very light so the wind blew them off easily. This made it a very expensive boat ride. The first lighthouse built in 1827 was a conical design. (shown in picture at left) The lamps turned out not to be bright enough so they built the second lighthouse (1858). Since it was built before the civil war, it was built by slave labor. It was an interesting design but it was desperately in need of a paint job. We ate our lunch as we floated around in front of the lighthouse. We thanked George and Bonnie and said that we would stay in touch.
