April 14, 2008 - Wilmington, NC

Drove to Southport to catch the 11:00 a.m. ferry to Bald Head Island. We just missed it and the next one wasn’t until 1:00 p.m. So we drove back around to Caswell Beach to see the Oak Island Lighthouse (1950). This lighthouse was built of concrete and its light can be seen up to 24 miles away. After taking our pictures, we drove back to Southport and went to lunch at the Pharmacy, a restaurant recommended by the Visitors Information Center. The Pharmacy is famous for their crab cakes. The crabmeat is placed inside Phyllo dough and then fried. It was delicious and I certainly got my grease quota for the day. Now that we were filled to the brim, we drove back to the ferry and just made the 1:00 p.m. departure. The ferry boat was very comfortable in spite of all the wind. We got off the ferry and walked a couple of blocks to a place where we rented a golf cart. We drove to the Bald Head Island lighthouse and visited the cute chapel next to it. The lighthouse was first built in 1794 out of brick in an octagonal shape. After a tornado toppled it in 1812, it was replaced by a fortresslike stone tower in 1818. The brick walls were 5 feet thick and a 7 foot deep brick and sandstone foundation. This lighthouse was so different than all the others we had seen lately. The seamen used to call it "Old Baldy". We continued our drive to the end of the island. They do not allow cars on the island (except construction vehicles) which made the ride very relaxing and quiet. Some of the homes that are built on the beaches are absolutely beautiful and very large. We drove around for an hour and then returned the cart and jumped on the ferry to return to Southport. It was a hectic but fun day.
