April 21-23, 2008 New Bern, NC

Arrived in New Bern around noon. Larry ran some errands while I cleaned up the RV. It was pouring down rain with lightning and thunder. It was a nice day for me to do my cleaning since it was raining all day.

Drove to Otto and Peggy’s house around 11:30 a.m. They live in River Bend which was about 25 miles from where we were staying. There house is very spacious with a great screen room that overlooks the canal right next to their backyard. After lunch they drove us around their community, into downtown River Bend and then into parts of New Bern. There is a lot of history in this area and many old buildings. We went into their church that was once used as a hospital by the Yankees during the Civil War. They put big planks over the pews to make hospital beds. When the war was over the Yankees removed all of the wood and returned the church to its original status. We went back to their house and had dinner, watched a little TV and played games.

Otto and Peggy came to our campground to see our RV. They were very interested in our life style and how all the things worked in the RV. We then followed them to the Tea Pot restaurant for lunch. It was a very small restaurant that had recently opened. The food was great and the fresh home-made apple pie was the best.

It had been raining again off and on all morning. We went back to their house after lunch and packed things up to go out on their boat for a ride around the canals and the Neuse River. We saw beautiful homes, boats and their new clubhouse. We had to put our umbrellas up periodically but it was still fun and it certainly wasn’t cold. It started to rain a little harder so we went back to their house to play some bridge. We no sooner got back and it started pouring down rain. We all congratulated ourselves on our good sense to come back to the house when we did. Had a wonderful dinner and watched Boston Legal then said our good byes. They certainly did a great job of showing us their community and New Bern, not to mention the wonderful food Peggy and Otto prepared.
