April 26, 2008 - Roanoke Island, NC

The site of the Wright Brothers National Monument is located in Kill Devil Hills on the Outer Banks. The Wright Memorial Shaft was dedicated in 1932 to Orville and Wilbur Wright in commemoration of the conquest of the air. A bronze replica of the 1903 flyer was located near the memorial shaft. The grounds next to the visitor center had markers showing the distance traveled during the first four flights as well as replicas of the Wright brother’s workshop and living quarters.
We drove back to Roanoke Island to the town of Manteo. Found a Mexican restaurant for lunch that again wasn’t Mexican food. It was more like Southwest Mexican and a poor example of that type.
We left the restaurant and decided to drive to The Elizabethan Gardens. The garden club of North Carolina created a beautiful 16th Century-style garden as a living memorial to the lost
colonists. There were flowered-bordered walkways, antique garden statuary, herbs, wildflowers, gazebos, trees and a sunken garden. The weather was perfect and we took our time strolling through the gardens. They had so many different colors of camellias.
In the gardens was a live oak tree that they believe has been there since 1585.
We saw squirrels and a lovely black stink bug.
