Had to get up early this morning so we could get all our sight seeing in today. Drove to Harrisburg and got to the Capitol building around 8:30 a.m. We had the option of going on a guided tour with 70 children or going on our own. Guess what we did? You guessed it. We took our little map and found our way through the Capitol building. This is truly the best and most beautiful Capitol building that we have seen. It was officially opened in 1906, replacing a building that had been destroyed by fire in 1897.The rotunda has a 272 foot high, 52 million pound dome,
modeled after St. Peter’s in Rome, and is the showpiece of the building. The interior of the dome is ringed by medallions representing law, art, religion and science. Four
larger murals represent coal, oil, steel and William Penn’s ships coming into the New World. The marble staircas
e was inspired by the Paris Opera. The floor is laid with Pennsylvania made tiles produced by Doylestown craftsman at Mercer Tileworks. A total of 377 mosaics can be found
in the flooring. The tiles are set chronologically, beginning with Indian activities and artifacts and ending with modern devices.

There were 14 stained-glass windows, each weighing 200 pounds. Framed in 24-Karat gold-leaf and represented themes such as education, justice and abundance.
The walls are dominated by murals. The largest mural in the Capitol is behind the Speaker of the House’s podium. It spans 35 feet square and includes explorers, intellectual, spiritual and military leaders fro the state’s past. William Penn stands at the center of the work, with Benjamin Franklin, in blue, at his side. The marble used in the room is from the Pyrenees Mountains in France; the Capitol is the only place in the western hemisphere this marble can be found.

Her paintings focused on the creation and preservatio
n of the Union and took more than 8 years to complete. There are 10 stained-glass windows in this Chamber also. The desk are mahogany from Belize and date back to 1906.
The drapes weigh 87 pounds per pair, the bronze light fixtures weigh two tons each. The green marble down the sides of the walls is called Connamara and is imported from Ireland.

The art on the walls was painted by Violet Oakley. One of the paintings, “Divine Law” reveals the words
“love,” “law,”, and “wisdom.” Another is “Scale of Law,” in which she compares law to the musical scale. The chamber also has one of about 150 “keystone clocks.” The face features the seal of Pennsylvania and the glass is in the shape of a keystone, Pennsylvania’s symbol.

We went to the Governor’s Reception room next. He uses this room for news conferences, meetings and receptions.
The table at the front is used for bill signings and the chairs and table are hand-tooled Spanish leather.
The grandfather clock is over 100 years old and is from the home of former Governor Daniel Hastings, who served in 1897.The computer-controlled fountain behind the Capitol is dedicated to Pennsylvania veterans.
As we were driving around Harrisburg, we noticed statues of decorated cows. I just had to take a picture of them to add to the collection of other animal statues that we found in other cities.

Our next stop was at the National Civil War Museum. This museum was fantastic. The museum consisted of two floors. It covered the cost of the war, the roles women had during the war, weapons and equipment and uniforms. Both sides of the war were equally represented.
We left Harrisburg and drove to the town of Hershey. Hershey’s Chocolate World is a huge
attraction with food, entertainment and shops devoted to all things chocolate. We took a 12 minute journey in a cocoa-bean shaped cart that took us through a simulated Hershey’s chocolate factory, where we experienced the transformation of the cocoa bean to milk chocolate. As we exited the ride, we received free samples of the chocolate. It was delicious. The 3D animated musical adventure was next. It was really fun and I screamed a couple of times as furry things ran under my seat. When you exit the 3D theater you find yourself in their gift shop with the smell of wonderful chocolate. We bought a few things and then headed home.
